Curiousity House The Screaming Statue by Lauren Oliver and HC Chester

They’re back! Lauren Oliver and H.C. Chester have come up with another recipe for fun. Take one part 1930’s hard-boiled detective series (think Sam Spade and The Maltese Falcon), add a little murder (for spice), mystery (for texture), and humor (just because you can) and you get an adventure middle grade readers will just love.

The second book of the Curiosity House series finds Pippa, Sam, Thomas and Max finally happy after the infamous villain Nicholas Rattigan has fled. Dumfrey’s Dime Museum of Freaks, Oddities, and Wonders is however still in danger of going out of business. What oddball scheme can Mr. Dumfrey think of this time to save the day? In book one you may recall, he put his hopes in a shrunken head, but murder and mayhem followed!

Mr. Dumfrey decides to recreate the murder of a famous New York heiress inside the museum. He asks his friend Siegfried Eckleberger to sculpt wax heads for the exhibit. Eckleberger is murdered and our four sleuths must solve the case. They end up solving much more, when they discover the truth about the murder of the famous heiress and unexpected things about their archenemy Rattigan.

Add a new boy whose head can turn all the way around his head like an owl, a thin boy named Chubby, a house cat and those gruesome wax sculptures and you have yet another unforgettable mystery. Be warned. Reading these books can become habit forming. This is a must read.
