I recently attended a writer’s conference in Atlanta and while there, was blown away by the awesome science books written by authors in the region. Here are three of my favorites!

National Geographic Kids Brain Games: The Mind-Blowing Science of Your Amazing Brain by Jennifer Swanson.

brain

The blurbQUICK: Name the most powerful and complex supercomputer ever built. Give up? Here’s a hint: It’s housed in your head and it’s the one thing that makes you YOU. Your brain is mission control for the rest of your body and steers you through life. Not bad for something the size of a softball that looks like a wrinkled grey sponge!

In this fascinating, interactive book — a companion to the National Geographic Channel hit show – kids explore the parts of the brain and how it all works, brainy news nuggets from a neuroscientist, plus fun facts and crazy challenges.

Judging by the reviews, this book is fabulous and fun! I can’t wait to get my copy.

Edible Science: Experiments You Can Eat by Jodi Wheeler-Toppen.

edibleScience

The blurb: Grab a beaker, pick up your whisk, and get ready to cook up some solid science. Using food as our tools (or ingredients!) curious kids become saucy scientists that measure, weigh, combine, and craft their way through the kitchen. Discover dozens of thoroughly-tested, fun, edible experiments, sprinkled with helpful photos, diagrams, scientific facts, sub-experiments, and more. And the best news is when all the mad-science is done, you’re invited to grab a spoon and take a bite — and share your results with friends and family.

I bought this book for my niece. She was thrilled, and so was her mom who home-schools.

How Rude! Real Bugs Who Won’t Mind Their Manners by Heather Montgomery.

howRude

The blurbSome bugs litter. Some pass gas. Some bugs throw their poop! Discover ten of the rudest, crudest bugs around.

Full of scientific facts, humor and just the right amount of yuck, How Rude! will make you scream “gross!” Featuring a countdown of the top 10 bad bugs who just won’t mind their manners. One part illustration and one part photography, How Rude! is hilarious, informative, and seriously gross!

I’m a big fan of anything Heather Montgomery writes, and this book didn’t disappoint. It is perfect for readers who like non-fiction with a little gross-humor thrown in.

If you’re looking to add some science-themed books to your middle grade shelf, you can’t go wrong with these!

Enjoy!
