If you are squeamish, don’t read this book. If you feel creepy crawlies on your back at the mention of bugs, don’t read this book.
If you are intrigued by the wonders of nature and think strange insects (and arachnids) are super cool, you must check this book out. Wicked Bugs (Amy Stewart, Algonquin Young Readers) is filled with pages of the meanest, deadliest, grossest bugs on Earth. Luckily for us, Stewart did all the hard work for us. She must have checked every crawl space, under every rock, and in every jungle to find this awesome collection of things you don’t want to touch.
When I first got the book, I plopped down on the couch and flipped though with my nine-year-old. It was fun discovering about these things we would never want to meet in real life. Along with the information provided, this guide was beautifully illustrated by Briony Morrow-Gibbs. You may see one or two move out of the corner of your eye, but rest assured, it’s your imagination (or is it?).
If you love middle grade non-fiction – Wicked Bugs is a no-brainer. Helpful hint…you may want to keep the book sealed in a Ziploc bag to make sure nothing escapes from the pages. (*In writing this review, I have swatted at my legs twice and arm once – nothing was there).
