This is the second story in the Kiranmala and the Kingdom Beyond series. Kiran seems like a normal middle school kid living in New Jersey, but she’s actually Princess Kiranmala, the daughter of the evil Serpent King in the Kingdom Beyond. Her adoptive parents have raised her in New Jersey to keep her safe from her evil father.

A message comes through the interdimensional television asking Kiran to come back to the Kingdom Beyond to save her friend Prince Neel, who has been taken prisoner by the Serpent King. Kiran defies her parents and sneaks back to the Kingdom Beyond. Once there, she discovers that the only way to find Prince Neel is to join the reality TV show, “Who Wants To Be A Demonslayer.” Her challenges include battling demons, solving riddles, and enduring endless bad puns. But the hardest puzzle of all is deciding who to trust. Not all of the demons are trying to eat her and not all of the humans are who they seem to be.

This action-adventure tale is set in a fantasy world inspired by traditional Bengali folktales and ridiculous reality television.  Although she’s obstinate and impulsive, Kiran is also courageous, loyal and great at solving riddles. You wouldn’t have to read the first book to enjoy this one, but as in most series, reading the first one is better. I recommend it to readers 10 and up.
